Trendy without overdoing it

Being an it-girl shouldn’t be a goal in and of itself, but there is nothing wrong with wanting to be the first one among your friends who knows the latest trends not only in fashion, but also in music, films, cuisine, technology and travel. If you want to be the go-to person for all tings trendy, here is what you have to do.

Read as much as you can on the topics that interest you most. You don’t have to buy all the magazines available on the market, because there is no need to spend a fortune on materials that you can also find online. Having a couple of favorites you subscribe to though, whether they’re culinary magazines, ones covering travel or couture fashion, is not a bad idea as sometimes online content gets replaced with new materials, and having a paper edition you’ll always be able to go back to specific trends.

If you want to be a real style icon, you can’t just stick to reading about top designs and interesting places, but you have to bring them somehow into your life. Buying designer clothes and spending vacation at the most posh places may be quite pricey, but to be trendy you don’t have to copy the magazine life exactly. If Japan is in, instead of flying to Tokyo get a kimono inspired dress; if it’s all about healthy eating, treat your friends to interesting salads with home made dressings, pita bread sandwiches and exotic fruit.

Whatever you do, make sure there is still you among all those trends. You don’t have to be dressed like the girls from magazine covers, eating the same things stars eat and visiting the same stores or clubs that are named on every “places to be” list. Your twist on trends is what will set you apart from fashion victims and celebrity wannabes making you into the girl to watch among your friends.
