The word ‘design’ doesn’t have any general definition and means something different in every field but it mostly describes a plan, a concept. To design is to plan, to come up with an idea about how something should look. There are many various design disciplines from the most common couture fashion design through graphic design to packaging design.

We have no doubts that a fashion designer or a floral designer is an artist, but would we call, let’s say a business designer like this? Design is about creating; visualizing something in our mind and when someone creates something the process looks the same, no matter what is created. So how is it exactly? Are all designers artists?

I think they are, and very special, talented ones. You need to have an abstractive mind to come up with anything that is later to be created. If it is a project of a complicated system or the layout of law firm websites then additionally you have to have the knowledge not many people have. Most of really good designers have both scientific and artistic way of thinking, it is very rare. Most of us have only one tendency which determines if we are good at Mathematics or foreign languages at school and what kind of profession we choose.

A fashion designer is not only a person who can draw well and has imagination. They have to know a lot about different fabrics and be good with numbers. A web designer is creating websites but also has a huge knowledge when it comes to computers and the Internet in general.

Design is not only art, as we often wrongly associate it, it has some elements of science. That is why designers are not regular artists. They are talented craftsmen with the sense of beauty and technical preparation – I think it is even more than an artist.
