The Karaoke era has begun. First it was only Japanese entertainment, now it came to the rest of the world gathering more and more enthusiasts. The popularity of it can be easily understood – people can shine for at least one moment, be the center of attention and they can feel the shiver of going on stage and singing in public. Me and my friends discovered the magic of karaoke when we were visiting Northern Ireland. People there love this kind of spending time and every bar has one evening during the week dedicated to karaoke. In the local bar close to the place we were staying there was a karaoke contest every Thursday. The amount of singers and their skills were impressive!

We started to watch it and we were amazed how many people love to sing during karaoke evenings. We were dreaming to go on stage as well but somehow we didn’t dare. We knew that after coming back to our country we would have to see how the karaoke fever looks there and maybe then we would start taking part in it.

I love singing but somehow I don’t want to sing in front of strangers. My friends are the same, they sing when nobody hears. But then we discovered a karaoke computer program. We only needed a computer, a special program with many songs to choose from and a simple microphone. We used to meet in the evenings and sing like crazy. The fun was great; we discovered some small talents among us but most of all it was just a great way to spend time.

After some time we got a bit bored. We didn’t want to sing only for each other anymore. We needed something more but we were still too shy to perform on a karaoke evening in the bar. I remember this one evening with my friends. We prepared something nice to eat at my place. We were seating, eating and drinking, it was a bit boring. One of my friends was sitting in front of the computer looking for a place we could go that evening. Suddenly he started to laugh so hysterically that I nearly choked on my chicken lavash. We all looked at him curiously. He said he just found something especially for us and started explaining.

It occurred that he had found a new Internet site where people can log in and sing in public, with or without showing themselves. It was something especially for us. The amount of songs to choose was impressive and there was even an option with melody for beginners or without melody for more ambitious singers. We logged in and started our fun. It was perfect! We could sing for the others, not only for ourselves and the others could judge us. Then we were listening to other people and we judged them. It was just like the real karaoke bar but still safely at home, without too much stress.
